Jane was sitting on the side patio when she heard the men approaching from the barn. It made her heart flutter when she saw Michael and Patrick joking around with each other. Her father gave her a lighthearted wink before stepping into the house. Michael was heading for a large outdoor lounger.

Jane noticed the worried look in Patrick’s eyes and knew right away that he’d waited to tell her father and son about the state of things beyond their rural homestead and community. When her father and mother emerged from the house, she could see Heather had been crying. Her father looked like he’d been hit by a boulder, and Jane knew the news had been shared. Instantly, her gaze darted to Michael as the pair sat down and joined the trio. Her son’s expression changed instantly as he looked around the somber group.

“It looks like I’m missing something,” Michael said. “What’s going on?”

Jane sighed. “There are some things we need to talk about, and it’s going to be difficult to understand.”

“Mom, I’m fifteen now. I understand more than you think.”

“I know, but this is different. Outside of this community, things are really bad. Not just with the power being out, but the people who are out there and only looking to do harm to others.”

“What do you mean? I thought everything would go back to normal soon.”

“I wish it were that simple, kiddo. The truth of the matter is that most of the world is without power, if not all of it. It’s going to take a long time for anything to get back to what we’re used to, and it’s only going to get worse.”

“How long are we talking about here?” Michael asked.

“It will be at least a year and a half before they will have any solutions to the power being out, maybe longer.”

He scoffed. “You’re lying. There’s no way it’s going to take that long to get power running again. I mean, they must have all kinds of resources we don’t even know about.”

“I’m not lying to you. With how bad things are, it could even be longer than that. If you could see the things Patrick and I saw out there, you’d understand. Now, if we’re going to make this work, we’re going to all need to—”

“I already talked to a handful of the other kids around here. It’s not going to take that long, Mom. They’ll have the power up and going before school starts in the spring. You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Jane didn’t know what to say to her son. She knew the information had to be difficult to process. If she hadn’t seen the devastation firsthand, Jane knew she wouldn’t believe it, either. He was only fifteen, though; she didn’t want him to understand just how awful things had become, but perhaps telling him the truth was the only way she’d get through to him.

“What’s it going to take for you to believe me?” Jane asked.

He shook his head, his eyes full of tears and pain.
